Activated Carbon Filters: What They Remove and What They Do Not

Activated Carbon Filters: What They Remove and What They Do Not

Carbon is one of the most common materials in water filters. It is simple, effective and used in almost every home system.

How it works

Activated carbon has a huge surface area with many tiny pores. Certain substances in water stick to this surface, a process called adsorption.

What carbon is good at

  • Reducing chlorine taste and smell.
  • Reducing some organic compounds that affect taste and odour.
  • Protecting RO membranes from chlorine; see how reverse osmosis works.

What carbon does not do

  • It does not remove dissolved salts or reduce TDS in a major way.
  • It does not make microbiologically unsafe water safe. For that, see UV sterilizers.
  • It does not soften hard water; see hard water in Oman.

Forms of carbon filters

Carbon is available as granular (GAC) cartridges, carbon block cartridges and loose media for larger tanks; see filter cartridges and filter media and resins.

Replacement

Carbon becomes saturated over time and stops working, so replace it as advised; most home carbon cartridges are changed about every six months, but this depends on use and water quality. Read how often to replace cartridges.

Getting the best from carbon filtration

Activated carbon works by adsorption: contaminants stick to the huge internal surface of the carbon. This is why carbon is so good at removing chlorine, many organic compounds and the tastes and smells that come with them. It is one of the most useful stages in a home system, and the one customers notice most in the glass.

Carbon has limits. Once its surface is full, it stops working and can pass contaminants through, so a carbon stage must be replaced on schedule. It does not remove dissolved salts, hardness or TDS, and it is not a substitute for disinfection when the water is microbiologically unsafe. Pair it with RO, UV or a softener where needed.

Using carbon well

  • Place it after a sediment stage so it does not clog with dirt.
  • Choose carbon block when you want finer filtration, and granular carbon for higher flow.
  • Flush a new carbon cartridge before use to wash out fine carbon dust.
  • Replace on schedule, even if the water still tastes fine.
  • Do not leave a carbon housing unused for long periods with stagnant water.
  • Combine with other stages as in the best water filter setup for homes.

Carbon filter questions

Does carbon remove salt or TDS?

No. Reducing dissolved salts requires RO or a similar process.

How do I know the carbon is exhausted?

Chlorine taste or smell returns, flow drops, or the replacement date has passed. Do not wait for all three.

Is carbon needed with RO?

Most RO systems use carbon pre-filters to protect the membrane from chlorine, and some use a carbon post-filter for polishing.

See our filter cartridges or ask which carbon stage fits your system.
