Water Filter Problems at Home: Simple Checks and When to Call a Technician

Published October 23, 2026

Water splash on a bright blue background

Most water filter problems are small and easy to fix, but a few need a technician. This guide lists the common symptoms in homes and small businesses in Oman, the simple checks you can do safely and the signs that it is time to call us.

Safety first: switch off the power and close the water supply before touching any electrical unit such as a UV sterilizer, dispenser or RO pump, and never open a pressurised housing without releasing the pressure.

1. Low water pressure or slow flow

The most common cause is a clogged sediment cartridge. Check when it was last replaced and read low water pressure after installing a filter. If a new system is slow from the start, the housing size or cartridge may not suit the flow: see filter housing sizes. Call us if replacing the cartridge does not help.

2. Bad taste, chlorine smell or cloudy water

A used-up carbon cartridge stops removing chlorine and odour. See what activated carbon removes and how often to replace cartridges. If the water is cloudy after changing a cartridge, flush the system as described in first start and flushing a new RO system. If the smell persists, the cause may be the storage tank: read how often to clean water tanks and consider a tank cleaning.

3. RO water tastes flat, salty or too little water comes out

A low flow or rising TDS reading can mean the membrane is ageing or the pre-filters are blocked. Read when to replace an RO membrane and what TDS means. A continuous drip or running sound from the drain line should also be checked by a technician.

4. UV light is off, flashing or the alarm sounds

This often means the lamp has reached the end of its life or the sleeve is dirty. See when to change a UV lamp and how to clean a quartz sleeve. Do not drink untreated water if your supply depends on UV disinfection and the unit is not working.

5. White scale on taps, kettles and glass

This is a hardness problem rather than a filter fault. Read hard water in Oman and water softener vs water filter, and look at water softeners.

6. Leaks and drips

Tighten loose fittings by hand only, check that the housing O-ring is seated, and make sure the cartridge is the right size. A leak near electrical equipment, a cracked housing or a leak that keeps returning needs a technician.

7. Dispenser smells or tastes off

Dispensers need regular sanitising. Follow our dispenser cleaning guide, and replace the filter if there is one.

When to call a technician

  • Leaks near electrical equipment or any damaged housing.
  • No water flow after you replaced a cartridge.
  • RO or UV units that keep alarming or shutting down.
  • Water that tastes or smells wrong even after new cartridges.
  • Any system you are unsure how to open or flush safely.

Our repair and maintenance team covers all of Oman, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For urgent problems call +968 9894 8406, or book a service or contact us with a photo of the problem.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my filter needs replacing?

Changes in taste, smell, flow or clarity are the usual signs, and the date of the last change is the best guide. See our cartridge replacement article for typical intervals.

Can I fix a leak myself?

Simple causes such as a loose fitting or a misplaced O-ring can be checked by hand. Anything else is better left to a technician.

Do you repair filters you did not sell?

Contact us with the make and model, or a photo, and we will tell you what is possible.
