Backwashing reverses the flow of water through a sand filter to flush trapped dirt out to waste. It keeps flow strong and water clear.
When to backwash
- The pressure gauge reads about 0.5 to 0.7 bar (7 to 10 psi) above the clean starting pressure.
- Flow from the return jets looks weak.
- Water is cloudy even though chemicals are balanced.
Do not backwash too often. A slightly dirty filter actually traps finer particles. For the difference between filters, see sand vs cartridge filters.
Steps
- Switch the pump off.
- Set the multiport valve to BACKWASH.
- Switch the pump on and run until the water in the sight glass runs clear, usually one to three minutes.
- Switch the pump off and set the valve to RINSE.
- Run for about 30 seconds, then switch off.
- Set the valve back to FILTER and restart the pump.
- Note the clean pressure reading on the gauge.
Common mistakes
- Changing the valve position while the pump is running.
- Skipping the rinse step, which can send sand back to the pool.
- Backwashing for too long, wasting water.
Replace sand every few years. See pool equipment and chemicals, or ask our pool services team. Follow your equipment manual if it differs.
Backwashing tips for better results and less water waste
Backwashing is simple, but small habits decide whether it helps or harms the filter. Always write down the clean pressure reading after the first backwash following a sand change, then use that number as your reference. When the gauge rises well above it, the filter is loaded and needs a backwash. Backwashing on a fixed calendar day regardless of the gauge usually wastes water.
Water in Oman is a valuable resource, so make every backwash count. Stop as soon as the sight glass runs clear, rinse for the short time recommended, and do not repeat the cycle unless the water is still dirty. If the glass never clears, the sand may be worn out, channelled or clogged with oils and scale, and a deeper clean or sand replacement is the real fix.
Signs the sand or valve needs attention
- Pressure rises again within a day or two of a fresh backwash.
- Sand appears in the pool or in the sight glass after backwashing.
- The valve leaks water to waste while the pump is in filter mode.
- The water stays cloudy even with correct chemicals and a clean pressure reading.
- The sand has not been changed for several years, as noted in the steps above.
Backwashing questions
Do I need to backwash after heavy rain or dust?
Check the pressure gauge. If it has risen noticeably, a backwash is due. If not, there is no need.
Can a cartridge filter be backwashed?
No. Cartridge filters are removed and rinsed instead. Read sand vs cartridge filters to see which suits your pool.
Why is my pressure still high after backwashing?
The sand may be blocked with oils or scale, the valve may be set wrongly, or the pump flow may be too high. A technician can check the filter, valve and pump together.
