Water jugs (دبة ماء) are used in many homes and offices in Oman. Good water can still taste bad if the jug and dispenser are not kept clean. These simple habits help.
Store jugs the right way
- Keep jugs in a cool, shaded place, away from direct sun and heat.
- Store them away from chemicals, fuel and strong smells.
- Keep the cap on until you use the jug.
Clean the jug
- Empty it and wash with clean water and a mild unscented soap.
- Rinse well until no smell or soap is left.
- Sanitise as the jug maker advises, then rinse again.
- Let it dry upside down before use.
Do not forget the dispenser
The dispenser top and tap are where dirt collects. Follow our dispenser cleaning and sanitising guide. Browse water dispensers and coolers if yours is old.
How long can water stay in a jug?
Use a jug soon after opening it and do not top up old water with new. If the water smells or looks different, replace it. Read filtered water vs bottled water for a comparison with filtered tap water.
Another option
If you carry jugs every week, a filter at the sink may suit you better. See under-sink vs whole-house filters or ask about our water jugs.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean the dispenser?
Regularly, and whenever you change the jug if it looks dirty.
Is boiling tap water better than using jugs?
Boiling does not remove salts or chemicals. Test your water and pick a suitable system; see how to test drinking water at home.
