How much salt will it use?
That depends on your hardness and your water use, and on whether the head regenerates on a timer or on metered volume. A metered head regenerates only when it has actually treated its capacity, which usually cuts salt and water consumption noticeably.
Does softened water taste salty?
No. Ion exchange swaps calcium and magnesium for a very small amount of sodium, far below the level you could taste. If you want the sodium removed as well, an RO unit at the drinking tap handles that.
