A sediment filter is usually the first stage in a home or business water system. It is simple, but it protects everything that comes after it.
How it works
A sediment filter is a physical barrier with tiny openings. Water is pushed through, and particles larger than the openings are trapped. Typical examples are sand, rust flakes, silt and scale pieces.
What does the micron rating mean?
A micron is about one twenty-five-thousandth of an inch. A lower micron number means finer openings and finer particles caught. Most ratings are nominal, which means the filter blocks around 85 percent of particles at the rated size. Common pre-filters for food-service use range from about 5 to 50 microns.
What it does not do
- It does not remove dissolved salts. For that you need reverse osmosis.
- It does not make water microbiologically safe. For that consider UV.
- It does not remove chlorine taste, which is the job of carbon.
Why it matters
Sediment filters extend the life of carbon cartridges, RO membranes and UV lamps by keeping particles out. Clear water also lets UV work properly. Replace the cartridge on the maker’s schedule, or sooner if flow slows (see how often to replace cartridges).

Choosing and placing a sediment stage correctly
A sediment filter is usually the first line of defence, and its job is simple: stop particles so they do not clog or damage the stages behind it. It catches sand, silt, rust flakes and other visible matter. It does not change the dissolved content of the water, so it will not remove hardness, salts, chlorine or microbes.
Pick the micron rating to match your water. If the water carries large particles, start with a coarser rating, perhaps followed by a finer one, so the filter does not clog quickly. For clean water, a finer rating gives a clearer result. Check the cartridge regularly, because a clogged sediment stage reduces flow and can push pressure onto everything after it.
Practical guidance
- Place it first in the line, before carbon, RO, UV or softener.
- Use a clear or opaque housing according to the site, and shade it from sun.
- Replace on schedule or when the pressure gauge shows a rising drop.
- Keep a spare cartridge ready.
- Match the housing size. See housing sizes explained.
- Combine with other stages as needed. See the best water filter for homes.
Sediment filter questions
Does a sediment filter make water safe to drink?
No. It removes particles only. For drinking water, add carbon, RO or UV depending on your needs.
Why does my sediment cartridge change colour?
It darkens as it collects dirt and rust. That is normal, and a very dark cartridge is probably due for replacement.
Can I wash a sediment cartridge?
Only if the maker says it is washable. Most spun cartridges are replaced, not cleaned.
