Pool chemicals do an important job, but they must be handled with care. A few simple habits prevent accidents and keep products effective for longer.
Storage rules
- Keep chemicals in their original, tightly closed containers with labels visible.
- Store in a cool, dry, shaded and well-ventilated place away from direct sun and heat, which is especially important in Oman.
- Keep different products apart, especially chlorine products and acids. Never store them touching each other.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not store near fuel, paint or electrical equipment.
Handling rules
- Read the label before every use.
- Wear gloves and eye protection.
- Add chemicals to water, not water to chemicals, unless the label says otherwise.
- Never mix products together.
- Use clean, dry scoops that are used only for one product.
If something spills
Ventilate the area, follow the instructions on the label and keep people away. Do not wash large spills into drains without checking the label guidance.
Using the right amounts
Good testing prevents overuse. Read pool water basics and see pool shock treatment. Find products in pool equipment and chemicals or let our swimming pool services team manage maintenance for you.
Storage rules that matter in a hot country
Heat is the main enemy of pool chemicals in Oman. A closed garage or a shed in direct sun can reach very high temperatures, which can make chlorine products break down faster and increase the risk of fumes and pressure inside containers. Store chemicals in the coolest, driest, best-ventilated place available, out of direct sun, and well away from where children and pets can reach them.
Keep every product in its original container with the label readable, and never reuse empty containers for anything else. Keep powders dry, because moisture can trigger reactions or cause caking. Most important of all, do not store chlorine near acids, fuel, oils or other chemicals, and never mix products together. Mixing incompatible chemicals can release toxic gas.
Handling checklist
- Wear gloves and eye protection when handling chemicals.
- Add chemical to water, not water to chemical, as the label directs.
- Dissolve and pour carefully in a ventilated area, away from your face.
- Keep scoops and measuring cups separate for each product.
- Close lids fully after use and wipe spills straight away.
- Read the safety data sheet and keep emergency numbers at hand.
Chemical safety questions
What if chemicals spill?
Ventilate the area, wear gloves and follow the product label. Do not mix spills, and do not rinse a large spill into drains without checking the label.
Can I keep different chlorine products together?
It is safer to store each in its own container and not to mix. If in doubt, store separately.
Who can advise me on safe quantities?
Your pool technician can advise on the products suited to your pool and a sensible quantity to keep.
For safe chemical top-ups, see how to fix high or low pH or book a pool technician.
