A water softener has a tank of resin beads that hold on to hardness minerals. After some time the beads are full, so the system must renew them. This process is called regeneration.
How regeneration works
- Backwash: water flows upward to loosen the resin bed and flush out dirt.
- Brine draw: a salt solution passes through the resin, replacing the captured hardness minerals.
- Slow rinse: pushes the brine through the resin.
- Fast rinse: removes remaining salt before the softener returns to service.
What controls the cycle
A control valve starts regeneration, usually on a timer or based on water use. See valves and controls. Choose the setting that matches your water use and hardness.
Looking after your softener
- Keep the brine tank stocked with the correct softener salt.
- Clean the brine tank occasionally.
- Use a sediment filter before the softener to protect the resin.
- Replace resin when softening performance drops; resin often lasts several years, depending on water quality. Browse filter media and resins.

Keeping your softener resin healthy
Softener resin is the heart of the system, and with good care it can last for years. The resin beads exchange hardness minerals for sodium. When they are full, regeneration with brine restores them. The system then rinses out the hardness and excess brine and refills the brine tank for next time.
Several things shorten resin life: chlorine in the feed water, iron and sediment fouling the beads, and running the unit with a faulty valve or too little salt. A sediment and carbon filter ahead of the softener protects the resin. Checking the salt level, and the hardness setting after any change in water supply, keeps the softener efficient.
Care routine
- Use salt made for water softeners and keep the brine tank topped up.
- Break up any hard crust or salt bridge in the tank.
- Clean the brine tank occasionally to remove sludge.
- Check that the regeneration schedule and hardness setting still match your water.
- Test treated water for hardness to confirm it is working.
- Have the resin checked if the softener stops delivering soft water after regeneration.
Resin questions
How do I know the resin has failed?
Scale returns even after a normal regeneration, or soft water runs out much sooner than before. A hardness test helps confirm it.
Can I use ordinary table salt?
Use salt that is intended for softeners. Impurities in other salts can foul the tank and valve.
How often should regeneration happen?
It depends on hardness and water use. Meter-controlled valves regenerate based on usage, while timer valves follow a set schedule.
