High pH makes chlorine work poorly and can cause cloudy water and scale. A common product used to lower it is pH minus, usually sodium bisulphate in dry form. Use it carefully.
Test first
Do not add anything before testing. Use a reliable test kit and read home pool water basics: pH and chlorine. For causes of high or low readings see fix high or low pH in a swimming pool.
Steps to follow
- Read the product label and follow the dose it gives for your pool volume.
- Run the pump so the water circulates.
- Pour or spread the correct amount slowly, away from the skimmer.
- Wait, then retest. Add more in small steps only if needed.
See how long to run a pool pump each day for circulation time.
Safety
Wear gloves and eye protection, never mix chemicals and keep them away from children. Read safe handling and storage of pool chemicals before you start.
Common mistakes
- Adding too much at once.
- Not retesting.
- Ignoring other readings, such as alkalinity and cyanuric acid.
Where to find supplies

Frequently asked questions
Can I swim right after adding pH minus?
Follow the label. Usually you wait while the water circulates and then retest.
Why does my pH keep rising?
Common causes are the fill water, the chlorine type and aeration. Retest and adjust gradually.
