Many people in Oman ask whether tap water is safe to drink. The answer has two parts: the water that reaches your building, and what happens to it after that.
What the utility says
Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company has stated publicly that the water it delivers meets Oman’s standard for unbottled drinking water (No. 201218). It also advises households and facilities to check their internal water connections and clean their water tanks from time to time, because water that sits still for long periods can change.
Where problems can start
- Storage tanks: rooftop and underground tanks collect dust, sediment and scale if they are not cleaned.
- Internal pipes: older or poorly maintained plumbing can add particles, rust or a metallic taste.
- Heat: warm, stagnant water in a tank is not ideal for water quality.
What you can do
- Have your tanks cleaned and checked regularly.
- Check your pipes and fittings, especially in older buildings.
- Fit a sediment and carbon filter at the point where water enters the home or at the kitchen tap to improve clarity, taste and smell.
- Use RO and/or UV for drinking water if you want extra protection, based on a water test.
This article is general information, not a statement about any particular building. If you are concerned about your water, contact the utility and have your water tested.
Where water quality can change before it reaches your glass
Water may be treated before it reaches your building, but its quality can still change on the way. In many buildings the water passes through a storage tank, a pump and a network of pipes before it reaches the tap. Each stage can add something: sediment from the tank floor, warmth from a rooftop tank in the sun, or rust and scale from old pipework. Long periods without use make the problem worse because the water stands still.
You can often tell which stage is the problem by testing at different points. If the water is fine at the tank outlet but poor at the tap, the pipework is likely involved. If it is poor at the tank, the tank needs attention. A treatment system near the point of use then adds a final layer of protection.
Practical steps
- Inspect and clean storage tanks regularly. See how often to clean your tank.
- Flush taps that have not been used for a while.
- Replace corroded pipes and filters in the plumbing.
- Place a sediment and carbon filter near the entry point, and RO or UV for drinking water.
- Keep records of tests and maintenance.
- Book a check-up with a technician if you are unsure.
Tank and plumbing questions
Is tap water in Oman safe to drink?
Water quality varies by area and by building. Testing at your own tap and tank is the most reliable way to know. Many people also use a filter or purifier for drinking.
Does a filter replace tank cleaning?
No. A filter treats the water, but a dirty tank should still be cleaned.
How do I stop warm water in summer?
Shade and insulate the tank and pipes where possible.
