Short answer: a water tank filter is a sediment filter fitted on the pipe that fills your tank (inlet) or on the pipe that feeds your house from the tank (outlet). For most villas in Oman, the best setup is a washable or cartridge sediment filter on the inlet to keep sand and rust out of the tank, plus a whole-house filter after the tank and pump to catch what settles inside it. A tank filter does not replace regular tank cleaning.
This guide explains where to fit a tank filter, which type and micron size to choose, how to avoid low pressure on gravity-fed roof tanks, and how to look after it.
Why homes in Oman need a tank filter
Most villas and many buildings store water in a ground tank, a roof tank or both. The tank is filled from the mains or by a water tanker, and the house is then fed by gravity or by a booster pump. Along the way, water can pick up:
- Sand and silt from the supply, from tanker hoses and fittings, or from dust that gets in through vents and loose lids.
- Rust and scale flakes from old metal pipes and fittings.
- Settled sludge that builds up on the tank floor over time, especially in summer heat.
These particles block shower heads and tap aerators, wear out washing machine and heater valves, and clog drinking water filters early. A tank filter stops most of them before they spread through the house. For the bigger picture, read tap water in Oman: why your storage tank and plumbing matter.
Inlet filter vs outlet filter: where should it go?
| Inlet filter (before the tank) | Outlet filter (after the tank) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | On the pipe that fills the tank from the mains or tanker connection | On the pipe from the tank to the house, usually after the booster pump |
| Protects | The tank itself, so less sand and sludge collect inside | Taps, showers, heaters, washing machines and drinking water filters |
| Catches | Sand, silt and rust arriving with the supply | Anything that settles, flakes or grows in the tank and pipes |
| Best type | Washable mesh, reverse-rinsing or coarse cartridge filter | One- or two-stage whole-house cartridge filter |
| Watch out for | A very fine cartridge here clogs fast and slows tank filling | On gravity-only lines, a dense filter can reduce shower pressure |
Our advice: if you can only fit one filter, fit it on the outlet after the pump, because that protects everything you use. If you can fit two, add a washable filter on the inlet so the tank stays cleaner for longer.
Types of water tank filter
1. Washable mesh and reverse-rinsing filters
A stainless steel or nylon mesh catches sand and larger particles. Reverse-rinsing models let you flush the mesh clean by opening a valve, with no cartridge to buy. A typical mesh is around 100 microns, for example the Honeywell Braukmann F76S reverse-rinsing fine filter (100 µm). These are ideal on the tank inlet.
2. Disc filters
Stacked grooved plastic discs trap dirt between them. You open the housing and rinse the discs. They suit dirty inlet water and are common in farm and garden lines.
3. Cartridge sediment filters
A polypropylene (PP) cartridge in a housing catches finer particles, usually rated from about 50 down to 5 microns. Larger 20-inch “jumbo” or Big Blue housings hold more dirt and restrict flow less than slim 10-inch ones. See filter housing sizes explained and what sediment filters catch and miss.
Options we supply include the 20 Inch Jumbo Whole House Filter, the Single Stage Whole House Water Filter and the Two Stage Whole House Water Filter, with 20-inch jumbo PP sediment cartridges as replacements.
4. Carbon stage (optional)
A carbon block or granular carbon cartridge after the sediment stage reduces chlorine, taste and odour for the whole house. Always put sediment before carbon, or the carbon clogs.
5. UV stage (optional)
Sediment filters do not kill germs. If you are worried about bacteria, a UV water sterilizer after the sediment stage treats the water as it flows. UV only works well on clear water, which is another reason to filter sediment first. Read UV water sterilizers explained.
Which micron size is right?
A micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. The smaller the number, the finer the filter, and the faster it clogs. The best approach is to step down in stages rather than use one very fine cartridge:
- Tank inlet: coarse, around 50 to 100 microns, to stop sand without slowing tank filling.
- Whole-house stage 1: around 20 microns.
- Whole-house stage 2 (or before a drinking water RO or UV): around 5 microns.
A single 1-micron cartridge on a dirty supply can block within days. Two stages last much longer and keep pressure steady.
The pressure problem with roof tanks
Water pressure from a roof tank comes only from height. Every 10 metres of height gives about 1 bar of pressure. So if the bottom of your roof tank is 3 to 4 metres above your shower head, you get only about 0.3 to 0.4 bar at the shower, and every filter in the line takes a little of that away.
To keep good flow on gravity-fed lines:
- Fit the outlet filter after the booster pump if you have one.
- Choose large-diameter housings (20-inch jumbo or Big Blue) with full-bore 1-inch connections.
- Use coarser stages on gravity lines and keep fine filtration for the drinking water tap.
- Fit a pressure gauge before and after the filter. When the difference grows, the cartridge is full.
If the water is already weak after a filter is fitted, read low water pressure after installing a filter: causes and fixes.
A good setup for a typical villa
- Inlet: washable mesh or reverse-rinsing filter on the supply to the tank.
- Tank: a closed, clean tank with a tight lid and screened vents, cleaned and disinfected regularly.
- Pump: booster pump feeding the house.
- Whole-house filter: 20-micron then 5-micron sediment, or sediment plus carbon.
- Optional: UV for germs, a softener if the water is hard, and an under-sink RO at the kitchen for drinking water.
Living in a flat? You usually cannot change the building tank, but you can fit a compact filter on your own supply line. See water filters for rented flats and villas in Muscat.
How to look after a tank filter
| Filter | What to do | When |
|---|---|---|
| Washable mesh or reverse-rinsing | Flush or rinse the mesh | Check monthly; flush whenever it looks dirty or the pressure drops |
| Disc filter | Open and rinse the discs | When dirty or flow drops |
| Sediment cartridge | Replace (pleated washable types can be rinsed a few times) | When the gauge shows a pressure drop or the cartridge is brown |
| Carbon cartridge | Replace | As the maker advises, or when taste and smell return |
| UV lamp | Replace lamp, clean the quartz sleeve | See when to change a UV lamp |
For cartridge timing, read how often to replace water filter cartridges. Replacement cartridges are in our filter cartridges range.
A tank filter does not replace tank cleaning
Even with good filters, fine silt settles on the tank floor and a slimy film (biofilm) can form on the walls. Filters cannot remove what is already inside the tank. Regular cleaning and disinfection keep the stored water fresh. Read how often to clean a water tank in Oman, or book our water tank cleaning service.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Fitting one very fine cartridge on the inlet, so the tank fills slowly and the cartridge blocks in days.
- No bypass valve, so you lose water while changing a cartridge.
- Installing the housing against the flow arrow.
- Putting a carbon cartridge before the sediment stage.
- Expecting a sediment filter to kill germs. It does not; use UV or proper disinfection for that.
- Forgetting the filter until the shower pressure drops.
Showers still smell of chlorine after the whole-house filter? A shower filter can handle that bathroom by bathroom.
Frequently asked questions
What is a water tank filter?
It is a filter fitted on the pipe that fills a water tank or the pipe that feeds the house from it. It removes sand, silt, rust and other particles so they do not collect in the tank or reach your taps and appliances.
Should the filter go before or after the tank?
Ideally both: a washable filter before the tank to keep it clean, and a whole-house filter after the tank and pump to protect the house. If you fit only one, put it after the pump.
Which micron filter is best for a water tank?
Use a coarse filter of about 50 to 100 microns on the tank inlet, then 20 and 5 microns on the house side. Stepping down in stages stops early clogging and keeps the pressure steady.
Does a tank filter reduce water pressure?
Every filter causes a small pressure drop, which grows as it fills with dirt. On gravity-fed roof tanks, use large housings, coarser stages, or fit the filter after the booster pump.
Do I still need to clean my water tank if I have a filter?
Yes. Filters reduce how much dirt enters, but silt and biofilm still build up inside. Clean and disinfect the tank regularly.
Does a tank filter make water safe to drink?
No. A sediment filter improves clarity but does not remove dissolved salts or reliably remove germs. For drinking water, use an RO or UV system chosen after a water test.
